Question: Can i get in trouble for bringing public records to school?
(Posted by: Darrien J on 2009-03-18 18:57:17)
Yesterday i was searching to find my old address on the public records site...i found it...but when i was still searching the classmates.com pop up...popped up.lol. but any way i searched all my teachers and printed the papers out. i made a stupid mistake and i put them in my bookbag. the only information it had on there was their address, phone number, age and possible relatives. well anyway me and another teacher was talking about one teachers age, and she asked me how i knew, then i showed her the papers. then she gave them to my actual teacher. he was upset but understood they were public records and gave me a scenario about one of his friends and what they would do if they knew i had that information. so he gave my teachers the paper with their information. the first teacher was very upset because it was her mothers home address and she called my mother and started complaining on how i had personal info. the 2nd teacher was kinda upset and she sent me to the guidance counselor....but she wasnt very upset because she understood that it's the same info you can get from yellowpages. and the last teacher i never apologized to him but i meant too. and will apologize tomorrow. i guess the first teacher told the principal but she hadnt called me down yet... i dont think i violated any rules or regulation... i printed the papers while at home not at school. but i didnt think about all the breakins and killings that going on between teachers and students and i didnt mean any harm by printing it. and i don't have anything on my records other than trespassing when i was 7 i was with my older brothers. does anyone have any information about what can happen... wat can i say other than an apology? what if something were to happen to them...then they can say i had their records and addresses and i will probably be blamed for it... i am in 9th grade... and just about every teacher can say that im a good student...what can i say if they try to suspend me? |

I don't think they can do much unless they can prove that you actually intended to do something illegal or against school rules with the information. |

Legally, no. But it seems like they're going to try and pull some B.S. and get you in trouble anyway, even tough they have no legal grounds. MY ADVICE: Find some nerdy kid and ttell him your problem. Ask him to help you come up with a defense. Nerds love challenges like this, especially the ones that want to be lawyers. |

I don't think they can suspend you for that, usually it's for something much more serious. I recommend you kinda lay low and I guess as long as your principal isn't extremely upset you should be fine. Odd things like this happen, just try to stay calm, another thing, I would probably tell your parents about something like this, if they're reasonable they'll be able to see your side and it'll help your anxiety. |

By "something were to happen " I assume you mean that some crime was committed against them. If that is the case, you would be questioned, but not blamed unless there was actual evidence that you did it. Just don't do anything stupid and you won't have anything to worry about. Make sure you apologize to that last teacher. Stop into the principal's office first thing in the morning and "clear the air ". Tell her the truth and that you didn't mean any harm by it. This preemptive action will let the principal know that you really didn't mean to cause trouble and are sorry for it. You didn't break any laws - it was all public record. The school cannot do anything to you over this. You could stand firm and announce this, but that will only make you seem like a trouble maker. |
